Green Line On Your Phone Screen: What It Means
A vertical green or pink line usually appears overnight, without a drop, and does not go away. It is a hardware fault in the display itself, it will not heal, and there are a couple of things worth knowing before you pay to fix it.
What to do
Restart it once, then stop trying software fixes
A restart rules out the rare software glitch in about a minute. If the line survives a restart it is the panel, and no amount of resetting, updating or safe-mode will change that. Do not let anyone talk you through an hour of settings for it.
Work out whether it followed a drop or arrived on its own
A line after a drop is impact damage to the display connector or the panel. A line that appeared overnight with no incident is the display ageing — common on OLED screens after a few years, and notably common on some Samsung and Pixel models. Which one it is matters for whether a manufacturer might cover it.
Check the warranty before you pay anybody
If the phone is under two years old and the line arrived without damage, this is worth raising with the manufacturer or the retailer first — under Australian Consumer Law a screen that fails on its own inside a reasonable lifespan may be their problem, not yours. We will tell you if we think you have that case rather than quietly taking the job.
Expect a screen replacement, not a repair
The line is in the panel. There is no way to fix the panel itself, so the repair is a new display assembly — the same job as a cracked screen, at the same price. It will not spread to anything else in the meantime if you would rather wait.

- Will the green line spread?
- Often it does, slowly — one line becomes two or three over weeks or months. It does not damage anything else in the phone, so waiting costs you nothing but the annoyance.
- Can it be fixed without replacing the screen?
- No. The fault is inside the display panel, and the panel is not serviceable. Anyone offering to fix the line itself is replacing the screen.
- Why did it happen with no drop?
- OLED panels can fail at the row driver after a few years, and heat accelerates it. It is a known ageing failure on several popular models rather than anything you did.
- Is it worth fixing on an older phone?
- That is the real question, and the answer is often no. A screen is one of the dearer repairs — worth comparing against what the phone is worth before you commit.
